Digital Radiographs (X-Rays)
Dentists use x-rays to help diagnose diseases that cannot be seen during the intra-oral examination. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommendation for posterior bitewing x-rays for an adult with decay and increased risk for cavities (multiple fillings and crowns) is every six to twelve months. However, the ADA recognizes that “there is no one size fits all.” This means that dentists take into consideration a patient’s current health, age, the risk for disease and any signs of oral disease. This can mean that patients with no history of dental decay can reduce the frequency of posterior bitewing x-rays every two years.
Dental x-rays and pregnancy
Oral health is just as important if not more so during pregnancy. There are a lot of changes that happen to the body during pregnancy including changes in the mouth. Therefore it is just as important to continue routine dental visits to monitor the increased risk and help prevent the development of gingival or dental disease. The ADA and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists have concluded that it is safe to receive routine professional cleanings as well as dental x-rays during pregnancy with proper shielding.
Please feel free to visit the ADA’s website for more information on dental x-ray guidelines and radiation.
